Mel whitcomb

Artist Statement
My stubbornly uncooperative medium outweighs me by over 1000lbs and can not be manipulated with bare hands. I can’t put back anything that is taken off. It literally is as hard as a rock- because it is a rock. I refuse to deal with a single angle. A picture gives a mere glimpse of a 3-D object. It would take hundreds of pictures to tell the entirety of everything that is there. Taking a half a step around one of my sculptures shows something completely new. I am inspired by petroglyphs I find hiking. Carved into stone hundreds or thousands of years ago, they clearly tell a story I can’t begin to comprehend. They are often whimsical and convey a message of happy times long gone.
